JOHN WAYNE

PORTRAITS

All my life I've loved John Wayne movies, particularly the westerns. One of my earliest memories is of my dad taking me to see "Hondo" when I was six years old. Even at that young age I recognized there was something different about a John Wayne western, something bolder; men got dusty and their hats were ringed with sweat or the white salt residue. This was what we didn't get in the popular television westerns of that time. It was a look I fell in love with and it's that look I try to capture in my John Wayne portraits.

"Hondo" has always been my favorite John Wayne western because Wayne gets to work in this movie. He chops wood, puts an edge on an ax, shoes a horse and breaks a horse, all these things contribute to a full characterzation of a man who's been around and knows his way around. "Hondo" was filmed in 1953 in 3-D by director John Farrow and was produced by John Wayne's company, Wayne-Fellows. If you haven't seen this picture or haven't seen it lately I urge you to buy or rent the video tape until we're finally blessed with "Hondo"'s DVD release then buy it. The characters are great and so is the action (I particularly enjoy Ward Bond and James Arness).

Actually this picture isn't from the movie because if you're familiar at all with "Fort Apache" John Wayne's character, Capt. Kirby York, was ordered by his commanding officer, Col. Thursday (Henry Fonda) to stay behind with the wagon train and didn't take part in the last stand but I loved the grouping of the men and threw accuracy to the wind and drew it anyway.
